Athens’ National Garden 4\5

Welcome to Athens’ National Garden, a 15.5-hectare oasis seamlessly blending history, botanical wonders, and recreational charm in the city center.

Commissioned by Queen Amalia in the early 19th century and designed by horticulturist Friedrich Schmidt, the garden embodies neoclassical and romantic styles, featuring architectural marvels like the Zappeion Hall and the Caravel.

With over 500 plant species, including Mediterranean flora and aromatic herbs, the garden serves as a living repository of biodiversity. Ornamental water features, ponds, and a small lake enhance the garden’s beauty and provide habitat for diverse bird species and aquatic life.

Throughout history, the National Garden has hosted cultural events, fostering community engagement among Athenians. As an outdoor classroom, it offers educational opportunities, contributing to botanical and horticultural knowledge. Committed to conservation, the garden participates in breeding programs and research for global biodiversity efforts.

A haven for leisure, its shaded pathways, tranquil corners, and lawns provide a perfect setting for strolls, picnics, and reflection. Symbolizing Athens’ resilience, the National Garden remains a living testament to the city’s history, cultural heritage, and environmental stewardship.
